Kids: How to Prep Your Child and Manage

Framing the Conversation: Pre-Braces Prep

Before the appointment to bond the brackets, sit down with your child and address their fears directly with empathy and clear facts.

  • De-stigmatize the Look: Remind them that braces are an incredibly common rite of passage. Point out their favorite athletes, musicians, or classmates who wear them.

  • Explain the Sensation Honestly: Let them know that getting braces put on does not involve needles or pain—it’s just a process of "painting" glue onto the teeth and setting brackets. However, be direct that their teeth will feel tight, tender, or achy for 3 to 5 days after the appointment.

  • Gamify the Process: Let them look at color charts online beforehand so they can get excited about picking out their favorite color combinations for their bands.

The First Week Survival Guide

The initial week with new braces is the hardest hurdle. Use this sequence to keep your child comfortable and minimize irritation to their soft cheek tissue:

1

Stock a Soft-Food Diet

Days 1 to 3

1.Stock a Soft-Food Diet:Days 1 to 3.

Stock your fridge with foods that require zero chewing pressure. Opt for cold smoothies, Greek yogurt, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, and warm soups. The cold temperature of ice cream or iced water temporarily numbs the achy periodontal ligaments.

2

Master the Orthodontic Wax

Days 1 to 5

2.Master the Orthodontic Wax:Days 1 to 5.

New brackets feel rough against the soft inside lining of the lips. Teach your child to break off a small pea-sized ball of medical silicone wax, roll it between their fingers to soften it, and press it firmly over any bracket that is scraping or causing a raw spot.

3

Utilize Warm Salt Water Rinses

As Needed

3.Utilize Warm Salt Water Rinses:As Needed.

If minor canker sores or raw spots develop inside the cheeks, have your child swish a warm glass of salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt) for 30 seconds, 3 to 4 times a day. This speeds up tissue healing and reduces localized swelling.

Redefining Oral Hygiene with Braces

Food particles have a million new places to hide when brackets and archwires are introduced. Plaque builds up quickly around brackets, which can leave permanent white, chalky demineralization stains on the enamel once the braces are removed.

Help your child upgrade their hygiene routine with these essential tools:

A tiny, Christmas-tree-shaped brush| An invaluable device that uses a | | designed to slide vertically under | pressurized stream of water to flush| | the archwire to scrub away trapped | food debris out from between brackets| | food chunks from the bracket edges.| where normal floss shreds.

Encourage your child to carry a travel toothbrush to school so they can quickly rinse and brush after lunch, avoiding the embarrassment of having food stuck in their wires during afternoon classes.
